“In the ocean of music we listen daily and selectively pick to blog about, there is a part of artists who know how to tell a story, with the right flow, the right selection of sounds. Ricia Rae here with her dream vocals and a minimal asset of groove/melodic lines that help the vocal performance to do her magic, provide us a wonderful atmospheric chill electronica. How Do We Get out of Here? We discover good music!”

This is a pretty dark experimental electronic song written during one of the pandemic lockdowns. A good song to listen to when you’re feeling trapped by anything – a job, a zoom meeting, a relationship, a prison cell, the world.

Visco City – Press and Release [OFFICIAL AUDIO] (Video)

Categories: Electronica, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , |

“Press and release an oasis of layers with diversity in sound design, IDM break beats, intentional broken parts, glitches, lush atmosphere, nostalgic keys and a solid production which knows how to tease your ear senses. A beautiful piece of electronic art!”

About The Song:

The third track from the Solstice EP is a musical representation of moving from fear-based thought to a more enlightened state of consciousness, Press and Release does just that – unfolds from a ‘pressed’ tension into a beautiful ‘release’ as it progresses.

Samples of newsreaders reporting the pain and suffering of our world, weaved in amongst gritty textures and growling distorted bass, are eventually interrupted by a voice that speaks of “accessing other levels of experience.” What follows is a drum and bass-meets-electronica climax of melancholy and meaning, decorated with beautiful piano and vocal refrains that sing, ending the EP on a crisp high note that is both exhilarating and hopeful.

About Visco City:

Influenced by Flume, Bonobo and Catching Flies – London producer Bobby Turner, AKA Visco City, creates melodic, ambient electronic music that strikes a balance between beauty and chaos – while invoking an inner sense of meaning for the listener.

Turner started making music at college, and this fresh creative outlet, paired with dubstep and drum & bass raves, ignited his passion for electronic music.

Fast-forward to the present, Bobby found a new love for the chilled-out, melodic side of the electronic spectrum, and Visco City was born.

After meeting Birmingham artist Ed Geater in 2020, Geater spotted his potential and Visco City quickly penned a deal with independent Birmingham label, Brox Records.

Turner’s debut release, Solstice EP, is a 3 track journey that carries the listener on a progressive, ethereal wave through a range of different textures and tempos.

With versatility and a talent for building sonic complexity while retaining that infectious, melodic simplicity, Visco City is undoubtedly one to watch in 2020 and beyond.

Mirek Coutigny, Jonathan Bonny – As the Birds Fly (Electronic Rework) [feat. Jonathan Bonny] (Spotify)

Categories: Audio, Electronica, The Latest|Tags: , , , , |

As The Birds Fly (electronic rework) from Mirek Coutigny is a delightful ambient downtempo electronica with wonderful atmospheres and solid sound design, delivers its fine harmonic beauty wisely to the end.

Few words about Mirek Coutigny
In the last years Mirek Coutigny has been on a continuous quest to blend acoustic and electronic instruments as you’ve never heard before. The result is music that is driven by a never-ending pulse, influenced by minimal music, but always moving from one story to the next. From the combination of his energetic piano playing, nostalgic synthesizers and subtle strings emerges a cinematic soundscape that tells the story without images.

His debut EP was released in 2018. In 2019 he was joined by Jonathan Bonny and Jolien Deley for a series of liveperformances. 2020 will see the release of his next EP, on the label Icarus Records.

Echoes and dust: “...with Revisions #1, Coutigny shows promise that he can turn into a true musical voice.”

Poppunt: “... He impresses with a wide range of sounds, reminding of artists like Nils Frahm, Max Richter or HAUSCHKA. What a discovery!’

Dansende Beren: “... Despite all comparisons, we mainly hear an artist with a vision of his own, who knows exactly what he’s doing. A show on another level.”

alexmaax – Bets Off
(Spotify)

Amazing depth style of voice and beautiful music layering in this new song of Alexmaax.

Burgeoning artist alexmaax, the solo project of Los Angeles-based producer Max Hershenow (known for his work as half of two alternative pop duos, MS MR and Post Precious) gets ready to share his debut single "Bets Off" and accompanying video next week!

Max first got his start in music while studying at Vassar College and the Martha Graham School of Dance, where he began writing music to accompany his choreographies. Soon after graduation he started MS MR with Lizzy Plapinger and it quickly took off. After signing to Columbia Records in 2011, the band toured internationally for 5 years and performed at most major festivals, including Lollapalooza, Splendour in the Grass, Glastonbury and the main stage at Coachella. Since MS MR, Max has channelled his focus into production and writing projects with other artists- namely Charli XCX, Ryn Weaver, Nakhane, Francisca Valenzuela- and has also scored dance and film pieces.

As a queer artist discovering his own voice, Max was inspired by other artists like Perfume Genius, ANHONI, and the Knife, to create something that felt genuinely like his own. He began work on his first solo project in 2018 and is here now with "Bets Off," the first track from the forthcoming EP. For the first time in his music career, Max has embraced his insecurities and let them shine in this body of work.

He shares, "I always thought of myself as a potential vocalist. I was convinced there was this voice deep inside me that just needed to be unlocked in the right way. But I was insecure about its rough edges, and gradually developed a complex around singing. Eventually I resigned myself to being a producer and songwriter, even telling my mom to stop asking when I was going to start singing because it made me too sad. But the urge didn't really go away, and over the past few years a few things changed: MS MR came to a gradual end (or hiatus or whatever), and I started working with a vocal teacher who encouraged me to explore the outer edges of my voice in a freer way. I learned to face my voice with curiosity and playfulness instead of dread. I started hearing it differently, relaxing into its strangeness and specificity, nuance and limitations. Little by little I understood how to strengthen and nurture it."...

Marika Takeuchi
Interview

Nagamag:
What are the genres that describe better your music style?

Marika Takeuchi:
Modern classical music, ambient music, idm, classical crossover music, alternative music, contemporary piano music

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Marika Takeuchi:
I started playing piano at the age of three, and also played violin and french horn for several years as growing up. I then studied composition in Tokyo and film scoring at Berklee College of Music in Boston. My very first gig as a composer was songwriting for Universal Music Japan, and after I moved to the U.S, I've released my modern classical music as a recording artist, as well as writing music for films, advertisements, video games, and music libraries.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Marika Takeuchi:
Growing up, I always had a big passion for music. My first love was piano, and I loved singing, playing violin, and I also joined a school orchestra to play french horn. I played Japanese taiko drum as well, and I once even wanted to be a DJ. I just loved music in so many ways, and eventually realized that I wanted to write and produce music, so I can use all of my favorite instruments and sounds. But the biggest moment was when I suffered from severe depression for years and writing music helped me get through it. I realized that I could turn even negative feelings into something inspiring in my music, and that was the best therapy for me. And the whole experience had the biggest impact on who I am as an artist today.

Nagamag:
Do you have any new music coming out?

Marika Takeuchi:
My latest EP "Missing Piece" is out on May 5th, with the title track Missing Piece being released as a single on April 24th.

Nagamag:
What does music mean to you, and what inspires you to write music?

Marika Takeuchi:
Music is my best friend for life, and everything that happens in life, including both beautiful and difficult moments, inspires me to write new music.

Nagamag:
Most artists have a favorite song from a different music genre than the one they are producing music for... Which is yours?

Marika Takeuchi:
Moderat "Therapy"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which track from a similar artist you admire?

Marika Takeuchi:
Jon Hopkins "The Low Places"
