Paul Cousins – Broken Patches of Sky

“Удивительной красоты путешествие в мир алхимии звука, в котором переплелись в одной целое миры автора и нечто за гранью нашего понимания. Эта кинематографическая мелодия окунёт вас в завораживающую атмосферу, которая медленно и монотонно создаёт вокруг вас потрясающую звуковую картину. Музыка, которая помогает найти свет и тепло в окружающем мире, даже если вокруг одни разбитые небеса.”

“Amazing beauty, traveling to the world of alchemy of sound, in which the world of the author and something behind the line of our understanding were intertwined into one whole. This cinematic melody will plunge you into a bewitching atmosphere, which slowly and monotonously creates an amazing sound picture around you. Music, which helps to find light and warmth in the world around, even if there are only broken heavens around.” *

Paul Cousins Interview on Nagamag

Categories: Ambient Features, Ambient Interviews, Features, Interviews, The Latest|Tags: , , , , , |

.

Nagamag:
Which are the genres that describe your music style better?

Paul Cousins:
Ambient, Tape, Experimental

Nagamag:
Few words about your musical background and career?

Paul Cousins:
I'm a music producer and composer based in London. I create ambient and experimental music using reel-to-reel, tape loops, analog synthesizers and field recordings. My interest lies in the exploration of new sounds and creating soundtracks for emotions. Recently I've also been producing and collaborating with other artists, and working with brands to create sound for film.

Nagamag:
Do you remember your first connection of love to music that was the right impact to be a music artist now?

Paul Cousins:
After singing & playing bass in bands for a number of years I started to listen to a lot more instrumental music. I followed a trail of artists from Bowie to Eno to Tangerine Dream, which lead me to creating ambient music of my own. Once I got a few synths and started exploring sounds it became very freeing and I kind of fell in love with making music all over again.

Nagamag:
Do you have any upcoming releases?

Paul Cousins:
Yes, I have a live EP and an album planned for later on this year. It took a while to find the right direction to create an album, but once I found the right sonic palette it all fell into place. I'm looking forward to getting more music out there and sharing my explorations.

Nagamag:
Many artists listen to genres that they are not producing music for. Which track is your favorite that is NOT similar to yours?

Paul Cousins:
Sebastien Tellier "La ritournelle"

Nagamag:
Of Course Nagamag would love to listen also which is the track from a similar artist you admire?

Paul Cousins:
Jon Hassell "Last Night The Moon Came"

“The experimental sounds give birth to new ideas, which end up conquering the hearts of most listeners. -Assemblage- explores the horizons of ambient music, which boldly uses analog synthesizer patterns converted into digital audio.”

“Экспериментальные жанры рождают новые идеи, которые по итогам покоряют сердца своих слушателей. -Assemblage- исследует горизонты эмбиента, в котором смело использует аналоговые синтезаторы преобразованные в цифровой звук. ”

Assemblage’ is a study of reconstructing analog formats in the digital realm. The track is composed of 36 individual 1/4″ tape loops created on a 1965 Akai reel-to-reel. The video is animated from 1000 frames of 35mm film, shot using a Lomokino camera. Physical editing was applied to both formats before digital reassembly. Sonic and visual artifacts have been preserved to highlight the process.

“If you are too sensitive with melancholic music, not step in as this goes deep. If you are from those that melancholic music works in a cathartic way for their soul, their mood, cleaning the whole inside, then step in and let yourself flow. Fading Soul by MDJ Matthias De Jaeger is very emotional solo piano track which performed with clearly passion, erupting to strong harmonies which work as razor in your heart. Beautiful! ”

Paul Cousins – An Abstract Place (Video)

Categories: Neoclassical, The Latest, Video|Tags: , , , , |

“Receiving an ocean of music variety, and in beatless ambient styles like what Paul Cousins offers here sometimes is hard to define what worked more or less to catch your attention. Usually is the blend of harmonies, the story line which blended in a brilliant way together with a secret recipe from the artist. Same as many can follow the guidelines of a cooking recipe, yet few will reach the right taste. Here we feel that mesmerizing taste. A story line which through way and at end, left us with clean thoughts, total relaxed and a warm feeling about life. This is what a good ambient story can manage! ”

-Nagamag.com

An Abstract Place’ is inspired by the spaces we’re taken to during immersive listening. The track was produced with analog synthesizers, half speed 1/4″ tape effects and digital samples. It’s designed for reflective moments, walking alone or soundtracking a journey.

The accompanying video by director Edward Harber is an atmospheric study of the eroding coastline at Happisburgh, Norfolk. The historic area has undergone a process of coastal erosion in recent years, leaving a familiar place hard to recognise for residents. As more homes surrender to the sea, the sense of abandonment through elemental change weighs upon the landscape. The film takes this displacement further, by contorting the environment into something wholly unfamiliar. Sand flats merge with water intertwined in rock and tide motions are reversed. As the track unfolds the fragility of the landscape becomes fluid, echoing the ocean’s relentless pull upon the cliffs.

The track’s artwork is a collaboration with digital artist Signalstarr, and inspired by Russian abstract minimalist Kazimir Malevich.

Paul Cousins – Thoughts in the Ether (Video)

“Daydreaming has a soundtrack? Answearing affirmative will lead you to a journey of seren emotions triggered by Paul Cousins new track which interwines analog synthesizers and orchestral textures in a beautiful introvert trip”

-Nagamag.com

Thoughts in the Ether’ is a slow-burning reflection on daydreaming. Analog synthesizers and orchestral textures intertwine, expanding as the reverie evolves and moves further into the distance. Treated piano adds gravity as crystalline synths glisten across the surface. The accompanying film by director Edward Harber is an aerial study of the North Sea from Happisburgh in Norfolk, documenting a week in the evolving appearance of the water.
